1:00 p.m. Mean Girls - The sterotypical opera heroine is a picture of innocence surrounded by male guilt. But some of opera's most fascinating characters are the exceptions, women who cross the boundary. Jennifer Larmore discusses the challenge with Lucy Yates and Will Crutchfield.

Audiences from the Met to Covent Garden to La Scala have reveled in Jennifer Larmore's interpretations, and Bel Canto at Caramoor fans will remember her exciting appearances there as Eboli and Mère Marie. Now she is with us to help show the next generation how it's done.

7:30 p.m. Parlami d'amore - Speak to me of Love!
In the 20th century, Bel Canto migrated to Italian popular song, with favorites made immortal by singers like Tito Schipa, Carlo Buti, Luciano Pavarotti, and Andrea Bocelli.

Wednesday, August 1
Oldest Voices, Newest Voices - Two Free Events
5:30 p.m. A multi-media presentation on recorded Italian singers born 1843 - 1873.

7:30 p.m. A performance by Teatro Nuovo Apprentice Artists participating in the Mozart Role Preparation Project (Rachelle Jonck, director). Free and open to the public.

Thursday, August 2
7:30 p.m. Bel Canto Da Camera
Instrumental and vocal chamber music by Rossini, Mayr, Donizetti, and others. Mayr brought instrumental sophistication from the world of Haydn and Mozart along with him to Italy, and the younger Italian composers ate it up. Rossini was nicknamed "il tedesco" (the German), and Donizetti was a direct pupil and lifelong friend of Mayr.

Friday, August 3
4:00 p.m. Early Music Meets Bel Canto - An experiment whose time has come. Teatro Nuovo's three music directors (Jakob Lehmann, Jonathan Brandani, Will Crutchfield) discuss how Romantic Italian Opera and the Early Music movement can benefit from each other.
